Concept

What is gamification?

Gamification is a learning technique that brings the potential of games into education to improve results. To apply it in the classroom, students must first understand the game dynamics that will be used; this leads to greater engagement and, as a result, achieves the intended objectives.

Gamification aims to strengthen students' skills through experimentation and play, since a fun experience helps knowledge stick better.

The main objectives of this learning method include:

  • Creating a playful bond of engagement between the student and the educational process or the content being taught.
  • Being a motivating, effective tool that captures attention, fights boredom and drives students to learn.
  • Rewarding the student, especially in activities where learning itself is the only incentive.
  • Optimizing teaching outcomes.

Methodology

Elements for designing a gamified process

Before developing or configuring a plugin, we define together with your team the elements that will shape the game experience within Moodle.

Objectives

The learning objectives to be developed through gamification are made explicit.

Student profile

We assess participants' profiles before designing the experience. Richard Bartle identifies four player types based on behavior: killers (competitive), achievers (reward-seekers), explorers (explorers) and socializers (who enjoy interacting with other players).

Narrative

The story and context in which the gamification process takes place. It should draw on themes connected to participants' interests and motivations.

Mechanics

The game rules and interaction strategies that generate enjoyment, loyalty, engagement and motivation.

Components

The concrete game resources (rewards, badges, levels, points, countdowns…) that get participants involved and moving forward through each mechanic.

Applications

The ICT tools that support the various gamification elements (mechanics, components…). In Moodle, these are implemented through plugins and specific configurations.

In Moodle

Gamification within your Moodle platform

Moodle offers a solid foundation for gamifying courses: activity completion, access restrictions, badges and the gradebook. Building on that, we install, configure or develop plugins that add experience points, levels, leaderboards, challenges and rewards, integrated with your courses and institutional branding.

When existing solutions don't cover your model, we develop custom plugins compatible with your version of Moodle.

  • Analysis of your courses and definition of the game strategy.
  • Installation and configuration of gamification plugins.
  • Development of custom plugins when a specific mechanic is required.
  • Testing, instructor training and ongoing support.

Benefits

Benefits of applying gamification in the classroom

Implementing educational gamification has multiple benefits, including:

Makes learning fun and interactive

Regardless of the audience or topic, educational gamification helps you create exciting, educational and entertaining content.

Builds a learning habit

The most important goal of learning is instilling new knowledge, but that knowledge isn't always retained. Game dynamics encourage students to return to the content again and again, which improves retention.

Shows real-world applications

Gamification reinforces skills by applying them to practical scenarios, letting students see the real-world applications and benefits of the knowledge.

Reduces fear of failure

Mistakes are an integral part of learning, but in classrooms they're often a source of embarrassment. In a game, making mistakes and trying again is natural.

Makes learning visible

Whether it's a progress bar at the top of the screen or the levels still to complete, students always know where they stand and what's left to do.

Businesses

Gamification for corporate training too

Gamification isn't exclusive to schools and universities. In corporate training, challenges, badges and rankings help employees complete their training programs, reinforce key knowledge and stay motivated in mandatory courses.

Is it for you?

This service is ideal if…

  • Ideal if your Moodle courses have low engagement or high dropout rates.
  • Ideal if you want to reward your students' progress with points, levels or badges.
  • Ideal if you train employees on mandatory courses and want greater commitment.
  • Ideal if you need a specific game mechanic that existing plugins don't cover.

FAQ

Gamification plugins: frequently asked questions

Can’t find your answer? Write to us and a specialist will reply.

What game elements can be added to Moodle?
Experience points, levels, badges, leaderboards, progress bars, challenges and rewards, among others. We select the ones that best fit your learning objectives.
Do you use existing plugins or build them from scratch?
Both. We first assess whether an existing plugin covers your need; if not, we develop a custom plugin compatible with your version of Moodle.
Are the plugins compatible with my version of Moodle?
We check compatibility with your version before installing. If your platform is outdated, we may recommend an upgrade beforehand.
Does gamification affect course grades?
Not necessarily. It can work as independent motivation or be linked to the gradebook and activity completion, depending on what you define.
How long does it take to implement gamification?
It depends on the number of courses and whether custom development is required. After the assessment we give you a detailed schedule.
How much does the service cost?
It depends on the scope: number of courses, mechanics required and level of customization. Request a quote and we'll send you a proposal.
Do you provide support after implementation?
Yes. We offer technical support via WhatsApp, phone and email, plus training for your instructors and administrators.
